Haunted Canadian Cemeteries
What can be said about graveyards or cemeteries? As far as horror movies are concerned they are places where the dead come to life and attack the living. Some people claim they are place of peace and rest.
This is the final resting place for many famous people of Victoria and the scene of several ghosts. The spirit of Isabella Ross can be seen, usually looking out over the water. She owned the land where the cemetery was built. There is also the sighting of an unknown lady dressed in white.
The misty clad apparition of David Fee is spotted from time to time. He was murdered outside of St. Andrew's Cathedral in 1890 on Christmas Eve. The ghosts of a couple dressed in Victorian clothing have been seen floating around the west side of the cemetery. Visitors have sometimes spotted a lady darting around in a panic looking for her lost child.
This is one of the world's most famous haunted cemeteries. I have been there five years ago. During the day, the place is peaceful and full of history. At night, well, at night that is a different story. I didn't venture too far passed the iron gates. I consider myself to be extremely brave or fool hardy. I don't know which but I felt something or someone waiting for me in the dark.
The cemetery itself boasts numerous historical aspects. It holds the graves of both British and American soldiers, who lost their lives in the Battle of Lundy's Lane on July, 1814. It's also the resting place for Laura Secord, one of Canada's heroines recognized for her contribution in the war of 1812. Be sure to visit the sculpture of Laura Secord, with the creepy eyes that seem to follow you wherever you move! Although this in itself is quite freaky, keep in mind it's just an artistic device used by the sculptor. There are also many important archaeological resources to be found in the area because of the many military artifacts buried there from the war.
To this day, Drummond Hill Cemetery is said to be one of the most haunted cemeteries in all of Canada. Spirits tend to haunt the place they called home, a place they loved, or the place where they tragically died. Many lives were lost on this very same land, making it a hotbed full of ghostly activity.
It is said that apparition of five old soldiers, dressed as Royal Scots, can be seen limping across the battlefield, only to disappear far away in the distance. The apparition of three British soldiers have also been seen trudging up the hill, then marching, as if they are still going about their duties.
Skeleton Park Cemetery
McBurney Park, Kingston, Ontario
Back in 1813 to 1865 this park was known as Kingston's Upper Cemetery. What this was, was a mass cemetery/grave site containing more than 100,000 bodies which all died from contagious epidemics.
In 1894 Municipal government tried to remove the remains but many locals objected due to fear that contagious diseases might start again if dug up. The cemetery was transformed into Frontenac Park in 1895 and then became what it is known as today Mc Burney Park in 1965. It is said that over the years many different remains have surfaced throughout the park giving it the nickname Skeleton Park.
Do ghosts haunt cemeteries? I don't know. If I was a ghost I personally wouldn't. I would be among the friends I have left behind. I would play practical jokes on people and perhaps have a spirit or two with those that bump in a Canadian night.
