The Sixth Sense

A sense of a ghostly presence or paranormal phenomena.

This piece deals purely with ghostly phemomena and while I admit that there are other agents at work in the paranormal, apart from ghosts and their hauntings, those are very much rarer experiences but the thoughts put forward here still have relevance.

Sometimes a ghostly presence may have the ability to intrude into the physical and everyone sees it or hears it - then you'd say "Ghost!!", be happy with the explanation and tell everybody about it at parties.

It's the subtle ones - where you alone experience it that cause the worries -

To perceive anything in the physical world you know that 'It's my eyes that see it' or 'It's my ears that hear it' but when you think about it, they are only the receivers and it is the brain that processes what the eyes and ears pick up and it is the brain which gives it to the mind as being what's around you.

I am quite sure that those with psychic ability have a sixth sense which sends something that it picks up to the brain which in turn gives it to the mind as a perception. Your eyes, ears and other ordinary senses have been doing this all of your life and so the brain is wired to know exactly what to make of what it receives from them. But the brain is confused with the signals from the sixth sense and tries its best to interpret what it has received by using physical sensory pathways - it gets confused and the 'picture' becomes confusing.

I think this is often why kids are good at being psychic - their brains easily create new pathways and so the sixth sense merges in with the others, without problem and allows the vision part of the brain to 'see' and the hearing part to 'hear' and so on. As you get older, this is lost as life rewires the brain to accommodate the ever widening physical world that the kid grows up in.

Going off the human paranormal perception tack for a moment, it is a possible explanation for EVP and video picking things up that people can't see or hear - the spirit force is able to make use of electronics as it can the 6th sense.

Why is it that a psychic can see or hear a presence but a room full of others see or hear nothing? Because in the physical world there is nothing to see or hear. But the psychic picks up their perception of this presence through that other sense which triggers the brain into making sense of it - just as if it were physical - it's the 6th sense which feeds the brain's vision and hearing areas - the eyes and ears have nothing actually to do with it.

If what I'm putting forward about the way the 6th sense works is right, people with psychic and paranormal abilites but who are 'in denial' or simply inexperienced will get this kind of perception but get confusing part connections and signals - the brain is not being 'opened' or allowed to create pathways to make sense of this input from a different source - i.e. - the 6th sense. If the person accepts what is happening and is prepared to be like an interested observer by not trying to block it out, the next time it happens, then pathways in the brain will start to open and they will start to make more sense of the experience.

As in life, there is the good and the bad and we're all scared of something ghostly and nasty jumping out at us, with the chainsaw or other unfriendly sharp thing but that's Hollywood for you - If something cannot interact with you on the physical level - it can't hurt you that way either.

I did mention in the first sentence that occasionally a presence may appear to act on our physical level and everybody is aware of it. Tis true, tis true - but it's made rarer when you consider this. A lot of these occur when people are psyched up - a ghost investigation for example. Those people have all unwittingly engaged every sense that they possess and they are all probably as sensitive as they ever will be. It's not surprising then when a number of them perceive something together - to all of them the presence is as physically real as their collegues standing there but is it really physical? Couldn't it be that each has picked up the presence through their own 6th sense? It could also be an answer to why one member of the group didn't perceive anything - sixth sense not working!

That whittles it down to the rare 'presence in the physical' experience - or so it might seem. How many reports do we see of a driver running somebody over only to find no victim sprawled on the road? Or somebody late at work in an office and things start to happen? It might just be that the lonely concentration might open up the 6th sense's abilities. It is exceedingly co-incidental that many of these experiences seem to arise from people doing similar things - probably with much the same brain activity pattern. It might be argued that the phantom road crossers are taking delight in scaring the hell out of unwary motorists and must be in the physical realm to do it. Yup, they might well take the utmost joy from doing it - or they might be trapped in some kind of reinactment of their last minutes - that doesn't matter - it only happens if the driver is 'tuned' to the event. If they were in the physical, you would most likely have every other driver swerving all over the road trying to avoid ghostly jaywalkers - or every night at midnight the police would stop the traffic for ten minutes on certain stretches of road.

What about poltergeist activity then? That's physical enough! And so it is. Although there are conflicting ideas on this, let's assume that some of it is the sign of a ghostly presence. In the same way that I believe that we can 'train' our 6th sense, there is nothing to stop a presence developing their abilities. Just because they are 'on the other side' should not automatically mean that their processes cannot develop too. If they are an aware presence, I would think it highly likely that they can push their boundaries. It does not mean that they are entering the physical world to make their noisy point though. I believe that they are able to use our latent abilities for their own ends.

We have heard about and no doubt seen faltering examples of telekinesis by people willing things to move. Like the 6th sense this could be a 'hidden' part of our brain's make up too - not maybe in the accepted sense but it is reasonably well accepted that the brain has many hidden talents that when channelled could result in external phenomena - the power of the mind and brain over the body is well documented - ask any Bhuddist. How then would a presence use it? If I am right and we can tune into them, then there is no reason why some cannot tune into us. (I think a good example of that happening in lesser ways would be entities.) Taking the parasitic theme further, some may well be able to explosively use the force of our mind to lob the odd jug around. It could account for the number of times that adolescents seem to be involved - the pent up explosiveness of puberity might leave this as too good a chance to miss for a practicing poltergeist. Even if no outside agent is involved and it is the adolescent doing it completely unaided, it still points to areas of the mind that are still not understood.

So, what we perceive as a ghost or soul can appear to work in the physical but I am putting forward that they only appear to do this because that's the only way that we can project them into our mind. We are talking about once living people that have entered another state of existence - they have left the physical world and cannot directly interact with it without the use of some form of 'receiving apparatus' on our side of the divide - the sixth sense.

If you make the decision to go with your psychic abilities, you're already one jump ahead of what wants to use them - it's an absolute eye opener in reading the living as well!!!

As for seeing and hearing ghosts in houses and picking up their ' paranormal atmosphere' - good or bad - that is the living doing their psychic thing. Many people say that you can't control it - that you're stuck with it - I'm really not so sure about that. If kids lose their childhood psychic ability - then it shows that it can be switched off. If it returns or starts to develop in later life you will find that as you become more 'in tune' you will be able to also 'untune' if you want to - it's like everything - experience and practice. It's non acceptance that causes problems - you then have the lurking abilities but they are uncontrolled and seem chaotic and frightening - fear of the unknown and all that! In this case, non acceptance also has the added fear of what you experience as being uncontrollable.

If you go for it then the old wives tale of opening yourself up to something 'orrible is not on - you're more exposed in not accepting because you haven't developed the 'off switch' or in computer language - a firewall. The moment that you accept - it's you that controls the situation and this control develops with experience. Some may ask "But what if you come across something more sinister that ghostly phenomena? Aren't you opening up and putting yourself in harm's way?" No, if you go by what your sixth sense is telling you and you do not try to tackle the situation yourself if you lack the expertise, quite the reverse. It gives you the ability to judge the situation in a far more informed manner than it hitting you if you were unprepared. You would get early warnings for one thing. It gives you the chance to bring in experts in that particular area of the paranormal and at the very earliest stages, saving a lot of unnecessary problems and fear.

That's just my take on things and I have no doubt others might totally disagree but over the years I've found that the more I look into the paranormal, the less frightening and more 'ordinary' it becomes - people don't change into monsters or alter their habits much just because they are dead and haven't yet moved on. I might say that it's more ordinary but it's certainly still fascinating.
